Making the best out of unfortunate events

While enjoying one our most amazing moments in Oman where we found ourselves swimming in a pristine beach with nobody but ourselves and our friend Hassan, I felt a sharp pain on my foot when walking around on the beach while filming A..

Immediately it was clear that something was not alright as it hurt far too much to be anything normal but looking at the foot underwater didn't seem to show anything much so we continued enjoying our time and recording a bit for our vlog before we both left the sea.

It was at the moment I knew I messed up!

While walking in the sand, blood was gushing from under my foot and covering the sandal. It was a pretty nasty sight and I will admit I was pretty worried. Nevertheless, good luck still had a word to say as the fisherman's boat that had brought us there was just returning and we could all rush straight to the hospital without me worrying bout bleeding out at the beach.

As we sailed towards where we had left the car, we were concerned about insurance issues, quality of service and not freaking each other out but as it came to be, if there was a place to mess up on the trip, Oman was clearly it. It has amazing medical facilities and competent, English speaking staff which was more than happy to help even beyond the visits themselves.

The wound was quickly cleaned and bandaged at an emergency clinic after Hassan both drove us and wheelchaired me to the doctors office and, after an amazing lunch break which you can read about on the article adventures in Muscat, my left foot got a total of 3 stitches.

On that note, something amazing happened. While trying to get my mind off of the fact that my foot was being sown like it were a quilt, the doctor shared that she is from Pakistan and between stitches and health advice she convinced me to give Pakistan a try as I convinced her to give us her number for future guidance. Even in the worst of moments we were finding amazing people to help and inspire us!

Funnily enough, Hassan had been joking about me getting an injection most of our time there and as the tetanus shot needle was going through my arm, he almost seemed happy about the entire ordeal as he both filmed and took as many pictures as he could.

Hassan, love you man but that was a dick move wishing this upon me!

All's well that ends well but misfortune struck again and this time it struck both of us.

We are not quite sure what it was, though we suspect it was some southeast Asian snacks A bought for us, but one afternoon after lunch we both started feeling ill. First I felt as if my digestion had stopped and after hours of trying to sleep it off, became violently ill. Not long after, A became ill as well and we spend a night of horror while vomiting and failing miserably to get any sleep.

We had been laughing that during the previous 2 months we had not gotten any food poisoning in Africa and it eventually happened exactly on the first country after. The irony was not lost on us...

But in our debilitated state, we were once more blessed.

At this point our friend Hassan showed his true colors and treated us as if we were his very own kin. He helped us have food to eat, took care of us around the house, made time from his work and simply made sure we recovered the absolute fastest we could.

In our time of need, we discovered we had made a true friend, a true brother while on a foreign land.

Our time in Oman was an incredible experience in which despite our bad luck we were blessed with incredible human kindness that made us forget any of the frustration that physical illness brings. It was a country where even unfortunate events could not stop us from being happy with the world around us.

Oman reminded me that a friend is a treasure and that even in the face of bad times, friends can lift you up and put smiles upon your face.

I do not know when, but I am sure that one day I will be back to Oman to remember how great even the most unfortunate events were.

Inshallah!
