Our trip to Lithuania focused mainly on the Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit areas and so we were keen on seeing the attractions clustered around these places in particular.
One of the more remarkable ones is the Hill of Witches at Juodkrante.
A work that started in 1979, this is a place filled with painstakingly carved wooden sculptures depicting the local folk and traditions. Ranging from small to a few meters tall, these intricate carvings depicting dragons, witches, goblins as well as the odd rooster, tell the tales of this land and of the pagan ancestry which was among the last to be smothered by Christianity in Europe.
The hill itself charges no admission and you can simply walk off the main street and appreciate the 20 or 30-minute walk inside of it. A gentle trek that takes you through the tales of darkness and light and leaves you feeling relaxed afterwards.
Be on the lookout for new sculptures though as new ones are still being added.
