A had been trying to show me the northern lights for a year already and one of the main reasons we went to Iceland was to witness them.
We arrived there very late on a Friday evening and the hopes of seeing the lights on the first day were not very high. So as we drove to our first hostel and actually saw the lights, the excitement levels were much higher than the tiredness.
It had taken her a year but finally, she was showing me the lights! Faint, yellowish but definitely the northern lights!
I gotta tell you that at times it wasn’t easy to safely drive and not pay attention to the show but fortunately the best was yet to come.
On day two we stumbled upon an unbelievable spectacle of green dancing lights in the sky. Delighted with having this chance once more, we parked the car to take in the show and as fate would have it, a Chinese family also parked their car next to ours. Without turning any of their vehicle´s lights off themselves. In fact, they seemed more interested in recording the moment than in actually living it and the unnecessary light pollution had us livid.
Please, if you want to see the lights, make sure you don’t create unnecessary light pollution either for yourselves or for your fellow spectators.
We drove on a bit more and found an even better and more isolated place for ourselves and just sat there watching the show. And so the lights danced for us… like green mist floating just above the horizon… like giant balls of green smoke unfurling…A show from times immemorial slowly floating before our eyes…
Just wow!
