The Icelandic waterfalls

If you’ve read any of the other articles on Iceland, you will clearly see that I was both impressed and astonished with the raw natural beauty. And of that natural beauty, one of the most remarkable things to be seen all over this island nation are the waterfalls.

In Iceland the waterfalls come in all shapes and sizes and can be found throughout all of the country. Because we were only there for a weekend, we could only go to a few places and so we ended up only seeing 3 waterfalls.

The first one we saw was Öxarárfoss at Þingvellir National Park.

Relatively small in size, what was impressive for me was the fact that it was frozen. Now, true enough, behind the huge frozen layer of ice covering the entire falls, there was copious amounts of water flowing but I still do not get my head around how the whole thing could have been formed. How a layer of ice freezes on top of a fast-flowing mass of water is beyond me. But it is phenomenal to watch!

Next was Skógafoss. A massive 60m drop of water onto a narrow river.

We walked there just as it was getting dark and while walking through the snow we were a bit unsure if we were walking over the river or not. Regardless of that, the thundering water flow makes you feel tiny and powerless. A feeling that was only compounded by the darkness around us…

And last but by no means least for us was Seljalandsfoss.

This for me was the real treat! As we were driving along route 1 we saw a spotlight shine upon a large waterfall. At that moment we knew we had to see it and the day after we made sure we did.

It was just so very, very cool!

Just the two of us, next to an illuminated waterfall in the Icelandic winter.

Breathtaking!
