A had been to Iceland before and one of the places she insisted on taking me was Jökulsárlón. And I´m glad she did!

This magical lake sits at the end of Vatnajökull glacier and is where its chunks of ice access the Atlantic Ocean. If I´m honest I do not believe that I have the proper words to describe to you how extraordinary and surreal this place is.

Many of us live surrounded by blocks of cement and even the many that have a more rural life have no point of comparison to this place. Barren, snow-covered hills surrounding a large lake with a multitude of blue and white blocks of ice silently and ever so slowly moving towards the ocean. Even with all the tourists with which inevitably we had to share this place with, it seemed strangely silent… like a procession. Nature really is an incredibly beautiful thing and if you value it as much as we do and you get the chance to visit this place (especially in winter), do it!

Though we didn’t go for it, there are in fact boat tours to the lake itself. To be honest, I am a bit unsure about the concept and the effect it has on its surroundings but then again… what an adventure that must be!

At the end of the lake is Diamond beach. And you have to see that too!

It´s a beautiful place with black volcanic sand which in winter is both peppered with snow and with the large blocks coming out from the lake. There, if the howling wind allows it, you can hear the magical sounds of the ocean waves hitting not only the volcanic rocks but also the blocks of ice on the shore.

What a truly amazing place!
